Although a tourist phenomena today, it was not until the 1960s that the pinnacles Western Australia was even known to most Australians. However, after the Namburg National Park opened to the public, 250,000 visitors a year have flocked to see them. The strange-looking, almost eerie, limestone pillars, rising up to 4 meters, number in the thousands. Rising out of the yellow quartz sand of the desert, they stand out in stark relief, forming remarkable shapes that tickle the imagination.

Photographers love to capture the moon-like desert scene, and the best season to see the pinnacles Western Australia is in Spring, from August to October. The formations are clearly seen in the early mornings. The next best time is in the late afternoons. This is because the light at these times brings out the colors. In addition, the shadows bring out more of the unique features. Besides the twisted pillars, visitors also enjoy watching nocturnal animals like emus and kangaroos in the National Park.

Besides photographers, stark desert phenomena of the pinnacles Western Australia has captured the interest of movie cameramen, who like to show it as a backdrop scene. The pinnacles Western Australia were featured in an Indian movie called Daud, with Urmila Matondkar and Sanjay Dutt, and in the music video Standing on the Shore by the group Empire of the Sun.

Scientists believe that the pinnacles arose during an early epoch, a time when marine life was richer. The limestone that makes up the formations probably came from seashells. Over time, these shells broke down, becoming as fine as sand. This sand was then blown inland. However, beyond this point, the dune formations are somewhat of a mystery. The most popular theory is that the pinnacles were shaped by lime leaching from the wind-blown sand, then rain shaped the lower levels into soft limestone.
